About

A tour visiting Western Solar prefabricated homes made of local wood with a roof of solar pv. These are designed to be affordable, net energy producers, modern light convenient homes. The materials and craftsmanship are local. The first houses are built, we will visit the converted barn where they are pre-fabricated. Our guide is the ceo and pioneer of the Ty Solar. He and his wife own the culture centre, Rhos y Gilwen.

We go on to visit a community hall where we have lunch. The story of how it came to be built is fascinating. The man behind the heroic tale is our host. The hall is modern, super insulated, with heat pump and solar PV and electric car charging.

From here we visit a home that has been the subject of a huge and successful campaign, the 'hobbit house' hand built by Charlie and Megan Williams. The materials are local, the energy mostly renewable, the craftsmanship breath-taking.

The tour ends with a visit to Lammas Ecovillage nearby which is powered off grid with hydro and other renewables. All the homes are hand made and designed to be ultra eco. The 9 families live off the land under a relatively new Welsh planning policy, One Planet Development
